Flower bulbs are homely little brown nuggets that with a little human help can bring forth some of nature's most beautiful flowers. Just as William Blake praised the lily and Claude Monet painted impressionistic masterpieces of lilies, people today plant lily bulbs each fall with the expectation in summer of a magnificent display of beauty.

Now don't confuse lily bulbs with a root because the lowly root isn't much more than an enlarged section of stem. Lily bulbs are a self-contained flower plant with all the vital parts contained within. Just plant lily bulbs in fall for summer flowers, add water, and let nature do the rest. Lily bulbs are a favorite of gardeners because they come in a wide range of colors and they have a long blooming season.

Refrigeration is recommended for lily bulbs if they cannot be planted immediately. When planting lily bulbs it is important to select a proper location, one that receives sunlight for most of the day and has well drained soil, as too much water can rot flower bulbs. Plant the lily bulbs at a depth of 6'' and from 12'' to 16'' apart. Lily bulbs may also be planted in pots and a 6'' pot is preferred for individual plants, and  larger pots for multiple lilies. Professional growers even grow lilies from seed, although this is probably not something an amateur gardener will want to undertake. Lily bulbs simplify the growing process.

There are one hundred species of lilies that grow around the globe and they're organized into nine groups. Within each species there are multiple varieties and hybrids making lilies one of the most diverse flower groups in the world. Some of the favorite groups of lilies grown by gardeners in the United States are Oriental lilies that include the Stargazer lily and Tiger lilies. Another popular flowering plant grows from the Calla Lily bulbs, which have an interesting secret.

The secret is that Calla Lilies are not considered to be true lilies. These flowers are native to southern Africa and grow in a variety of colors including white, yellow, and pink. Calla lily bulbs produce hardy plants that can grow inside in pots or outside, and many varieties can survive a mild frost. Calla lilies once introduced for horticulture are now considered weeds in some parts of the world.

Oriental lilies are hybrids of several species and have fragrant flowers. One of the most popular Oriental lilies is the Stargazer lily. The Stargazer lily is a hybrid of the Oriental group of lilies and it was created in 1978 by Mr. Leslie Woodriff in California . Stargazer blooms are white, pink, and red and are toxic to cats. Stargazers are prized for their sweet fragrance and were named because the blooms face the sky. Stargazer lilies grow well all over North America.

Tiger lily is a name used to describe four different species of lilies. Tiger lilies are commonly spotted, as the name would imply. Most parts of some Tiger lilies are edible including the lily bulbs, which is why they are cultivated in Asia. Tiger lilies do not flower for long, but are prized for their bold flowers. Homeopathic medicine uses Tiger Lilies to treat myopic astigmatism.

Homely little lily bulbs produce some of the most prized flowers in the world. Lilies are valued for their variety, beauty, fragrance, and in some cases for their nutritional or medicinal qualities. Lilies are used for cut flower arrangements and are the most common flowers displayed at funerals representing restored innocence of the departed after death.
