Peter Pan romantically saved Piccaninny princess Tiger Lily from Captain Hook and the pirates in J.M. Barrie's classic tale. Gardeners today are just as romantic about tiger lilies, sometimes even rescuing them from extinction.

Tiger lilies are a common name for four different species of lilies among the more than one hundred lily species that grow in the world. The term Tiger Lily is also sometimes used for another genus of flower, the Tigridia, which are not lilies. Tiger lilies are true lilies of the genus Lilium and they grow naturally in many countries around the globe.

Gardeners propagate Tiger lilies in appreciation of the striking beauty of Tiger lily flowers. Tiger lily flowers come in many colors and nearly all of them are spotted as the name implies. Tiger lily colors include red, scarlet, coral, orange, yellow, and many shades in between.

The best known among Tiger lilies is the species lancifolium. These Tiger lilies are native to East Asia and are cultivated for their edible bulbs. The bulbs are starchy like potatoes and a little sweet. Tiger lilies of this species have also been used for medicine to treat morning sickness, general nausea, and  congestion.

The Columbia lily is a Tiger lily that grows naturally from California north to British Colombia and east into Idaho and Nevada. Native American tribes such as the Okanagon and Shuswap used to collect the corms and boil or steam them for food. Corms are enlarged stems and are differentiated from bulbs by botanists, but serve the same purpose. The flowers of these Tiger lilies are yellow-orange or reddish orange with spots.

The Wood Lily is a Tiger lily that grows naturally in 36 states, the District of Colombia, and in Canada. Wood lilies come in red, scarlet, coral and orange flowers with spots toward their bases. This lily is rarely cultivated and is more challenging to get started in a garden than other types of Tiger lilies.

Transplanting Tiger lilies is simple. Dig up some of the corms or bulbs, separate them, and plant them in well drained soil at a depth of 6'' . Water them, but don't overwater or the bulbs can rot. The key is to select a location with well-drained soil. Plant care for Tiger lilies is simple since these hardy plants thrive in nature all they need is some good soil and water. Tiger lily flowers will add color and variety to a garden.

Tiger lilies are a multi-use flower, good for beautifying a garden or for use as part of an exotic cuisine. The large variety of flower colors that Tiger Lilies provide gives gardeners an artistic floral palette with which to paint a landscape.
