Water Lily Flowers: Tropical Water Lilies And Monet Water Lily Painting

The Water lily is one of the most well known aquatic plants, thanks mostly to Claude Monet. Monet, a famous Impressionist painter, not only grew and admired his own water lily pond, he also painted numerous paintings of the flowers which have now become some of his most famous works. The Monet water lilies are some of the most recognized paintings and flowers in the world.
Many people who enjoy Monet's Waterlilies paintings plant and grow water lilies of their own.
A water lily is a blooming aquatic plant of the family Nympheaceae. The smooth green pad-like leaves and white six petal flowers of the water lily float along the surface of small bodies of water. Their roots reach down into the soil at the bottom of a pond in order to anchor the plants in one place. These flowers typically grow in homemade water gardens and along the shallow edges of ponds and lakes.
The water lily is divided into two types: hardy and tropical water lilies. The hardy variety of water lily blooms only during the day and is the most common, easily grown type. They bloom in spring and come in colors such as white, peach, yellow, pink and red.
Tropical water lilies bloom during the day or night. Tropical water lilies live up to their name and prefer warmer climates with temperatures over 70 degrees, though they can be grown in cooler climates if wintered indoors. Typically quite fragrant, tropical water lilies come in shades of blue and purple along with the same colors as hardy water lilies.
A water lily pond can be easily cultivated with a little knowledge and work. A water lily should be planted in a container three gallons or larger, as smaller pots will lead to smaller flowers. Heavy garden soil should be used to fill the pot up to 2 inches from the top. The water lily should be planted upright in the container with the crown of the tuber left uncovered. Then it should be topped with gravel before sinking the pot six or eight inches underwater.
These flowers need at least five hours of direct sunlight, as they get most of their food and energy from photosynthesis. They also prefer to be in an area with a few other plants, so they have less competition for surface area and therefore more sunlight.
Claude Monet recognized the beauty of the water lily back in the 1800's. Today it's a widely popular aquatic flower. Monet water lilies were made famous by his painting and can now be enjoyed in ponds, lakes, and water gardens around the country.
